Farm Gate Art Welding Workshop Information

Welding Workshop with Nick Webber

Dates : 2 Weekend Workshops to be held 9^th/10th August and 16^th/17th August

Time: 9.00 - 4.00pm with an hour for lunch each day

Location: Ravensthorpe

Cost: $70 per person for a 2 Day workshop

Limit of 10 people. So please register early

Come and learn how to weld scrap metals and old farm implements together to make a sculpture for your front gate as part of the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council Farm Gate Art Project

Learn techniques and skills that teach you:

how to identify and prepare metals to weld,
basic stick welding & grinding welds clean,
plasma cutting
spot welding
working with wire
designing in metal

Please bring lots of enthusiasm and some bits of metal you want to weld. It’s ok if you don’t have a solid idea of what you want to make yet, just bring some bits and we will help you with ideas on the day. The main thing is learning how to weld and being confident with that, so you are able to go home and then make what you want.

Prerequisites

There are essential prerequisites to this workshop.

You must wear covered in shoes
You must wear close fitting long sleeves and long pants (preferably cotton or wool content).
Please bring an auto darkening welding helmet and welding gloves.
Please bring a small 5 inch angle grinder if you have one and a couple of grinding discs (not essential)

You must accept full insurance responsibility for your own safety while attending this workshop due to the danger aspects of using these tools. All liability resides and remains with you as a participant. You will need to sign a waiver attesting to this.

Materials You Need to Bring:

Foraging for pieces you can use:

Go to your oldest farm tip where old machinery has been dumped and have a look for things in the list below. Or have a look behind the shed (there is usually a pile there) for bits that could be useful. If you are making flowers think about things that you have multiple amounts that might be the same shape that can be used for petals, stamens and leaves like u-bolts, bolts, points.

Have a good time foraging for interesting pieces that inspire you!

Suggestions:

Plough discs

Crop lifters (off header combs)

Bits of different size pipe

Car panels or coloured metal

drums

cogs

Chains from headers

odd chain links

springs

Old tools –eg spanners, screwdrivers, pliers

Bolts & U-Bolts

Thin rod – eg spokes

Points

Old Corrugated iron

Pressed tin

Wire mesh like old header separators

Material Ideas to Start:

Have a look these interesting scrap pieces to get an idea of what you will need to bring, if you’re not sure just bring it anyway and we’ll work it out from there!

Structure:

Think about how you might build your structure or how it will fit together. Is it going to be on a gate, or will it be freestanding? Some methods to use might be:

Use pipe to build up structures eg. stems, branches

Adding plasma cut shapes from found objects

Adding plasma cut shapes from flat sheet metal

Using found shapes together with cut shapes

Use negative and positive shapes eg cutouts in discs

Joining techniques:

Welding

Riveting

Lace things together

Wire objects on

Linking objects using chains

Colour

Will you paint it, or leave it rusty? You can get colour from car or machinery panels, drums etc. or you can paint afterwards.

A family show suitable for ages 5+, Squaring the Wheel combines circus, clown, strange mechanisms and contraptions, puppetry, magic and music into an unusual thingamabobbish theatre extravaganza.

Unpredictable, funny, touching, highly visual and occasionally out of control; it is a clever theatre adventure for the whole family in thinking out of the box

A humorous introduction into the work of clown and theatre with a mainly physical approach. Exercises of coordination, rhythm and movement followed by some playful improvisation.

Afternoon tea and tea/coffee/milo will be available for purchase at the hall.

Pink Threads Portraits a Huge Success!

Another Exciting Project by Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council!

To coincide with the performance of Calendar Girls last month, the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council held an exhibition in the hall of paintings made entirely by locals. The project was called Pink Threads Portraits. 100 canvases were distributed throughout the community and six free workshops run across the Shire to assist people to create their own portrait of themselves or someone they know who has been affected by cancer. Each portrait had to have a pink thread running from left to right.

On the night of the Calendar Girls play, the portraits were exhibited around the hall, with the pink threads joining them up to symbolise how we are all connected through our own experiences with cancer. The portraits were then auctioned off on the night with all proceeds donated to the Leukaemia Foundation WA in true Calendar Girls spirit. Of the 100 canvases, 89 were given back to the RRAC to exhibit and 61 of those were sold.

It is with much pleasure that we can finally announce that all sales have been complete and the project raised a total of $1420 for the Leukaemia Foundation WA! The RRAC also sold sunflowers for the Leukaemia Foundation’s “Sunflower Dash”, raising another $520.

Congratulations on your efforts to all who participated by contributing a painting for the night; the hall looked awesome, and a huge thanks to all those who generously purchased a painting.

Calendar Girls

It was a big night out in Ravensthorpe last Saturday 24th May at the town hall! A good crowd turned out to see the play Calendar Girls by Jally Entertainment and presented locally by the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council. The event was made possible with sponsorship by Healthway.

Upon entry, the audience received a free copy of the community calendar created by the RRAC and the Ravensthorpe Community Resource Centre. The calendar features dozens of photographs sent in by locals depicting the many volunteers across our community. Local community groups also sent in information to include on the calendar such as meeting dates and other events to keep us all informed as to what is happening when. Calendars are available from the RCRC if you missed out.

Whilst waiting for the show to begin the crowd were delighted by the 89 Pink Thread Portraits on display, many placing a bid in the auction to take one home. Door staff were also kept busy as the beautiful sunflower brooches proved popular. Sales from paintings and sunflowers are all to go to the Leukaemia Foundation WA in true Calendar Girls spirit, with well over $1000 raised from the generous bidders!

Finally the lights went down and the play began with an amusing Tai Chi scene....and it just got better and better! The audience were captivated by the antics on stage and roared with laughter at the many witty one liners. It was such a fantastic show and an all round awesome night out (one particular table practically had to be kicked out well after the final curtain)!

Thanks to the volunteers from the RRAC who brought this wonderful event to town, to those who sent in information and photos in for the Community Calendar, to the participants of the Pink Threads Portraits and to the generous bidders who purchased paintings and flowers to help us raise money for a worthy cause...together we do amazing things!
