Homespun Panels Free to Good Home!

After returning recently from the Regional Arts Australia “Arts and Edges” Summit in Kalgoorlie, the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council has finally concluded the spectacular Homespun project.

The RRAC have decided to gift the marvellous panels constructed as part of the Homespun project to local community groups and organisations to continue to display for the community.

Interested groups must inform RRAC Coordinator, Mel Daw on 0427 381 530 or email rraccoordinator@westnet.com.au before this Friday 24^th October of their preferences for a panel and the RRAC committee will endeavour to distribute the panels, in order of preference,  to those groups.

Groups that do take on a panel do so on the understanding that all care and maintenance now lies with them and that the panels must not be sold off if the group is disbanded in the future.  In this instance it would be required that the panel be given to another community group or organisation.

BIG Project a BIG Success!

There is no doubt that the recent BIG Project exhibited in the Ravensthorpe Town Hall was a BIG success!  The project, initiated by the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council, saw 12 BIG (Bold, Imaginative, Generous) local artists answer the call to paint a large (1.8x1.2m) canvas on the theme of local wildflowers.  The whole idea behind the project was to celebrate, promote and raise the profile of our local talent whilst at the same time showcasing our diverse and unique local flora.

As with all BIG ideas the project was not without hiccups!  Half of the canvases arrived damaged…which meant that artists had even less time to complete a finished work whilst they waited for replacements to arrive.  Each artist of course also had to then negotiate painting around busy lives in order to get the work completed whilst the RRAC madly organised the Facebook page, auction, official launch, and marketing and exhibition roster.  It was a BIG Project for all!

For the 615 people who came to view the exhibition over the Wildflower Show, not to mention the 162 guests at the Wildflower Show Gala Dinner, the end result was nothing short of spectacular!  The artists produced quality artworks that filled the hall and provided an amazing back drop to the Wildflower Show Gala dinner.  Of the 12 paintings completed, 10 were auctioned off successfully to generous bidders.  Apart from retaining the initial cost of the canvases, $90, the individual artists will be receiving all proceeds from their sales.

Continuing the Momentum with Ausdance WA

‘CONTINUING MOMENTUM’

CHILDREN’S CREATIVE DANCE WORKSHOPS

 

 

'Continuing Momentum’ is a project offered to communities from Ausdance WA who presented a Future Landings project in 2011 or 2013 to continue exploring and engaging in contemporary and community dance activities. In October 2013 the Ravensthorpe region community led by the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council delivered the engaging show ‘Wheel of Fortunes’ as part of Future Landings and so were then given the opportunity to host this new ‘Continuing Momentum’ project.

A ‘Continuing Momentum’ project could be created in any way the host community/presenter and the local dance artist believes would best benefit them. Local dancer Clare Doolan and performer Rebecca Hillier were the two local artists given the opportunity to develop and present the project. They decided to target the 5-12 year age group and offer dance workshops throughout the July school holidays. The emphasis was to be on the development of the workshops and to give local children an opportunity to be involved in dance. Taster dance workshops were also conducted at Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe and Jerdacuttup Primary Schools in the final weeks of term 2. So, every day of the school holidays Clare and Beck have been running Children’s Creative Dance Workshops at the Hopetoun Town Hall. Local Ravensthorpe, Jerdacuttup and Hopetoun children aged between five and twelve years have participated in the workshops which have involved movement activities, games and learning a contemporary style dance routine. There was also a showing, where parents had an opportunity to watch their children perform the dance routine and participate in a movement activity with their child.

Hopetoun based photographer Dene Bingham attended one of the workshops and took some fantastic images of the children in action, as can be seen in the photo storyboard.

 

Clare and Beck would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and families of the participants for their support of these workshops. The children all worked really hard and it was an amazing experience for both the facilitators and the kids involved.

Fred Smith combines beautiful songs, stunning projected photographs by military and civilian photographers and humourous and touching stories to bring us Dust of Uruzgan, a highly acclaimed album performed live with a two piece band and based on his time in Afghanistan as a diplomat and singer/songwriter. Dust of Uruzgan tells the story of the 20,000 young Australians who, for the last eight years, have made a difference in the war-ravaged country of Afghanistan.

The effect of this combination of mediums is powerful. Smith was actually there and the stories he tells are of real people and events. Audiences will leave the venue with a quiet sense of connecting with something real and important.
