PRESERVING FAMILY STORIES IN QUILTS

Monday 22^nd April at the Hopetoun Sports Pavilion

Come along to one session or both!

Session 1      9:30am        cost $5

Lyn shows ways of preserving family stories in quilts and fabrics. She will show how she has told her grandmother’s story in fabric pictures and how other details are recorded on a Family Tree, and on Friendship and Commemorative quilts. Participants will be involved in the making of a Friendship quilt. This will require no previous knowledge of quilting or sewing.

 

Lunch served at 12pm cost$10 from Kristin’s Kitchen

 

Session 2      1:00pm         cost $5

Lyn tells of her grandmother Maggie Kelly Kane’ s story in items brought to Australia in a Saratoga  trunk in 1901, when she sailed from Ireland on a Bride Ship. This will be followed by the screening of Lyn’s documentary film of Maggie’s Journey. An invitation will then be extended to the audience to share their family stories.

 PRESERVING FAMILY STORIES IN MEMORY ALBUMS

Tuesday 23rd April

9:30am to 2:30pm

At the

Ravensthorpe Community Resource Centre 

This workshop will interest the artists, writers and scrapbooking ladies, as it will highlight how to create a Memory Album around your family stories and memorabilia. It will start with the screening of Maggie’s Journey followed by a viewing of the items from the Saratoga trunk which includes clothes, letters, recipes, greeting cards and jewellery.

Participants are invited to bring along family memorabilia for some Show and Tell and then Lyn will demonstrate how, by recording stories to go with photos and memorabilia in your Memory Album, you will be preserving family history for the next generation. These writing techniques will be workshopped and shared, so a start can be made on creating your very own Memory Album.  Lyn will also demonstrate some interesting cost-effective techniques of scrapbooking an album.

Jane Germain and the Lazy Boys Rock Ravy

On Wednesday 3^rd April a crowd of over 80 people were treated to a toe- tappin’-thigh –slappin’  show  in the Ravensthorpe Town Hall as part of a regional tour by Jane Germain and the Lazy Boys (AKA Adam Gare and Ian Simpson).  Playing a fine selection of bluegrass, swing, country and blues the trio sang in brilliant harmony accompanied by each other on the guitar, mandolin and banjo.  Part of a Country Arts WA “Show’s on the Go”, the show was locally presented by the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council.

The band played a brief acoustic “sneak peek” earlier that morning at the Ravensthorpe IGA to a small crowd of surprised and delighted shoppers before heading down to Ravensthorpe DHS.  Here they once again set up for an acoustic performance for the Year 5 to 7 students, who were also provided with short explanations of instruments, music styles and insights into the life of a musician.

With no time to rest after the school workshop it was straight back up to the hall to set up for the evening performance.  The band, tour manager and sound technician were very much impressed by our newly refurbished hall, and Jane particularly enjoyed the chicken pictures on the wall by local school children…but they were even more impressed by the welcoming crowd later that night, and after no less than three encores the night was definitely a success!

Congratulations to Marilyn Tink for winning the ABC Radio complimentary tickets to come and see Jane Germain and the Lazy Boys.  Congratulations must also go to Christine Rowe for winning our “Crazy Chicken” Table decoration (judged by crazy chicken table decoration experts Milena and Taylah Wisewould, who managed to remain objective in their decision despite bribery from some tables) and to Vicki Grant and Brenda Tilbrook for winning our survey prize draw.  These lucky participants will all be receiving a complimentary ticket to the next RRAC show, The Canterbury Tales by Bare Naked Theatre Company in the Hopetoun Town Hall.

We have arrived safely and have met the other team members that have arrived from Broome, Karratha, Perth and Denmark. Started the morning with some gentle yoga.

When you hear “The Canterbury Tales”, you might initially think of long hours in school being lectured to on historical happenings and drifting off to sleep.

 

Well you can think again!  

 

This fast-paced adaptation of six of Chaucer’s famous stories has a surprise around every corner.

Just as in Geoffrey Chaucer’s day, this group of “Pilgrims” is hitting the road and heading off not to Canterbury, but in this case to Hopetoun!

 

Updated and with a modern twist, the stories of love and lust, stupidity and passion, chivalry and greed all unfold as the cast of six from the Bare Naked Theatre Company cruise effortlessly from “ye olden days”, to the wild west, then onto the “unflappable” roaring twenties, London in the hip fifties and finally off to a galaxy far, far away…

 

Comic, scurrilous, bawdy, poignant or tragic, this is an evening of fun for all ages....!

Locally presented by the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council tickets are available from Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe Community Resource Centre’s.

 If you book and pay for a table of 10 before the performance on Saturday the 13th of April we will give you a complimentary bottle of wine.

Don’t worry if you can’t make a table just buy your ticket and join in.  Come early and grab a Gourmet Wood Fired Pizza from The Toun Beach Café mobile pizza oven, a drink from the bar and catch up with your friends.

The performance will start at 8.00pm; doors will open at 7.00pm.  A bus is available from Ravensthorpe, leaving the Ravensthorpe CRC Carpark at 6.30pm and can pick up along the way, just book your seat when you buy your ticket.

A viewing of the film, followed by an alfresco BRING-A-PLATE meal after which audience members are invited to share their own family service stories and show any family memorabilia

Mon 22nd April - 9-12.30 ‘Quilts that tell a story’ Hopetoun Sprts Pavilion, Friendship Quilt community arts project, followed by catered lunch. 1-2.30pm ‘Maggies Story’ film screening, scrapbooking and family history/memorabilia workshop.  Cost $5 per workshop and $10 lunch.

Join us for a night of experimental painting...using anything but a brush!

Bring along some painting “tools” if they are handy, toothbrush, fork, knives, spoons...be creative!  Also bring an image from a magazine, book, drawing or photo to help complete your painting.

All paints and canvases will be supplied...as well as some painting tools and images in case you haven’t got any to bring!
