Farm Gate Art Trail 2013

The first welding workshops for the Farm Gate Art Trail were successfully held on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th August.  Artists Tania Spencer and Jodie Ditchburn are back again this year to assist people with skills and ideas in making a sculptural piece to install on their property as part of the ever growing Farm Gate Art Trail.

The Wheels Begin to Turn in Community Dance Project

 

On Friday 26th July a small but enthusiastic group of people from across the Shire....Hopetoun, Jerdacuttup and Ravensthorpe, braved the wet and cold weather and met at the Ravensthorpe Town Hall to participate in a movement session with Wheel of Fortunes choreographer Aimee Smith. 

 

After a brief session with Aimee the group then moved on down to the Dunnart Studio Gallery (where some thoughtful soul had already turned on the heaters) to work with the project's writing facilitator Nicola Jane le Breton.  Here, in the cosy warmth they let their thoughts flow free as part of a plan to "capture" as many local voices as possible to develop a script for Aimee to work with for the community dance later in the year.

 

Meanwhile, back at the hall, Aimee was working with more brave souls in a more intensive dance workshop, filmed by Amber Perryman.

 

Aimee and Nicola, along with Amber, spent the remainder of the weekend in Hopetoun, Jerdacuttup and Ravensthorpe gathering the community's thoughts on paper or providing taster workshops in dance and movement....giving us an idea of what is to come later in this exciting and innovative community arts event!

Meanwhile, back at the Dunnart Gallery, the writers try their luck spinning the Wheel of Fortunes.

Time: 9.00 - 4.00pm with an hour for lunch each day

Cost: $60 per person for a 2 Day workshop

Come and learn how to weld scrap metals and old farm implements together to make a sculpture for your front gate for the Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council on our Farm Gate Art Project alongside Artists Jodie Ditchburn & Tania Spencer this year. Learn techniques and skills that teach you:

 

• how to identify and prepare metals to weld,
• basic stick welding & grinding welds clean,
• plasma cutting
• spot welding
• working with wire
• designing in metal

 

Please bring lots of enthusiasm and some bits of metal you want to weld. It’s ok if you don’t have a solid idea of what you want to make yet, just bring some bits and we will help you with ideas on the day. The main thing is learning how to weld and being confident with that, so you are able to go home and then make what you want.

 

Prerequisites

 

There are essential prerequisites to this workshop.

 

• You must wear covered in shoes
• You must wear close fitting long sleeves and long pants (preferably cotton or wool content).
• You should be reasonably familiar with basic power tools, e.g. drill, angle grinder etc because we will also be using these tools
• Please bring an auto darkening welding helmet and welding gloves.
• Please bring a small 5 inch angle grinder if you have one and a couple of grinding discs

You must accept full insurance responsibility for your own safety while attending this workshop due to the danger aspects of using these tools. All liability resides and remains with you as a participant. You will need to sign a waiver attesting to this.

 

 

 Materials You Need to Bring:

 

Foraging for pieces you can use:

Go to your oldest farm tip where old machinery has been dumped and have a look for things in the list below.  Or have a look behind the shed (there is usually a pile there) for bits that could be useful. If you are making flowers think about things that you have multiple amounts that might be the same shape that can be used for petals, stamens and leaves like u-bolts, bolts, points.

 

Have a good time foraging for interesting pieces that inspire you!
